Hi. My name is Diego Martinez. I’m a journalist and storyteller based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I’ve been a lover of music for as long as I can remember.
I’m here today to talk to you about “choons”. And just, what exactly is a choon, you might ask? Believe me, it is a term.
Urban Dictionary defines it as “a song or a piece of music to which an individual assigns the highest level of merit, but most usually an exclamation upon hearing the song in public”.
So, in other words…if you’ve found yourself chanting the chorus to a song out loud at a club, in your car or in your home…or you listen to the first bars of a tune you love and you turn to someone and say “that’s my jam”…you know you are in the presence of a “Choon”.
“Choons” are songs that are larger than life, and form the fabric of our very own existence. They defy genres, musical styles, decades and even languages. They’re almost impossible to get away from, and most importantly, they lift our spirits and make us feel good. And with the way the world is today, we need that more than ever.
That’s why we’re opening up the discussion around these anthems...But we’re not going to do it alone. We’ll be doing it hand in hand with the people at the heart of the music making process: the CHOON architects: songwriters, arrangers, producers, the performers...and you, the audience.
